Emotional Wellbeing

Social and emotional wellbeing creates the foundations for healthy behaviours and educational attainment. It can also help to prevent behavioural problems and mental health problems.

Supporting children with their emotional wellbeing helps them to have positive social interactions with others and to make friends. If left unsupported children may start to have behavioural difficulties which may lead to further issues later on in the future.

Four steps to help you dealing with a child’s emotions

1. Adult recognises the emotion.

2. Adult names the emotion for the child

3. Adult provides some comfort.

4. Adult offers a solution.

The child feels emotionally contained

These steps are great to introduce and you may already being doing them. It will show to the child that their emotion is valid and you understand them and there is a solution. Over a period of time children will gradually be able to deal with their emotions themselves.
